Warning Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Upgrading

Your electrical panel distributes power to every circuit in the building, so when it starts to struggle the whole property is affected. Many panels in service today were sized long before air conditioners, induction cooktops, servers and EV chargers became common, and they are now running close to — or beyond — their limits.

Signs it is time for an upgrade

  • Breakers that trip frequently, especially when large appliances or AC units start
  • A panel, breaker or cover that feels warm, smells of burning or makes a buzzing sound
  • Flickering or dimming lights when equipment switches on
  • Old fuse boards, obsolete breaker brands or visible rust and scorch marks
  • No spare ways left for new circuits, or extension leads used as permanent wiring

An upgrade usually involves a load calculation, a new panel with modern breakers and RCD protection, and checking that the incoming supply, earthing and main cables are sized for the new demand. If you notice any of the warning signs above, switch off the affected circuit and have a licensed electrician inspect the panel before the problem turns into a fire risk or an unplanned outage.
